The 3rd Annual Concert for Carlos
Celebrating the Memory of Late Political Reporter
Carlos Hernandez Gomez

On Saturday, July 21, 2012, friends of late political reporter Carlos Hernandez Gomez will again gather to honor his memory with the 3rd Annual Concert for Carlos at Uncle Fatty’s Rum Resort in Chicago, IL. Doors open at 7:00 pm. Admission to the concert is $20 at the door, which also includes one ticket for the evening’s raffle.

Carlos was only 36 years old when he passed away in January 2010 following a yearlong battle with colon cancer. Despite his age he had made a name for himself as an “old school” political journalist with an encyclopedic knowledge of the history and goings-on in City Hall and Springfield. During his career he worked for a number of Chicago news outlets, including Extra Bilingual Newspaper, La Opinion, The Chicago Reporter, WBEZ and CLTV. He was known for his rapid-fire delivery, his sharp suits and fedora, and his signature sign-off on radio and television, delivering his name with a Puerto Rican accent, almost as one word, “I am CarlosHernandezGomez.”

His friends and colleagues continue to pay tribute to him and celebrate his legacy with this fundraising event. Proceeds will benefit The Carlos Hernandez Award in Journalism at DePaul University, DePaul University’s Political Science Department Carlos Hernandez Gomez Memorial Forum on Policy and Public Service, and Life Matters Media.

The concert will feature rock and roll and British Invasion music of the 60s and 70s, as well as 80s pop music performed by Carlos’s former band The Gear, Phil Angotti, System 80, and The Why? (a “super-group” featuring Eric Howell, members of The Carlisles, The Phil Angotti Band, Wells-next-the-Sea, and more). Ken Mottet will act as master of ceremonies for the event. Raffle prizes include an electric guitar donated by Avenue N Guitars and autographed memorabilia donated by Rock and Roll Hall of Fame musicians, as well as sports figures and film and television actors.

The evening’s honored guest will be Daniel Gaitan, the first recipient of the Carlos Hernandez Award in Journalism, which provides recognition and financial assistance to talented undergraduate students who might otherwise be unable to accept unpaid internships in journalism. “I understand what an important and beautiful legacy Carlos Hernandez had in his life,” said Gaitan. “I appreciate his courage in his political reporting, while maintaining his signature style and convictions. I understand his unwavering faith in God, as I myself am pursuing religious studies with journalism.”

In continued memory of reporter Carlos Hernandez Gomez, DePaul University’s Department of Political Science and the College of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences will be presenting what is hoped to be the first of a series of regular academic forums highlighting and analyzing trends impacting politics and public service in Chicago, Illinois, and the United States. The first of these, entitled “The 2012 Elections and the Media’s Role in Political Reform,” will take place on October 10, 2012 at DePaul’s Lincoln Park Campus and will be moderated by Andy Shaw of the Better Government Association.

Life Matters Media, a 501(c)3, aims to be the premiere provider of information, resources and support for all involved in end of life decision-making.
